What is an HRA Exemption Calculator?

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a salary component that's partly or fully tax-exempt if you pay rent, under the Old Tax Regime. The exempt amount is the least of three values: your actual HRA received, your rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, or 50%/40% of basic salary depending on whether you live in a metro or non-metro city.

This calculator applies that exact rule so you can see how much of your HRA is exempt and how much remains taxable.

The Three-Way Comparison

  • Actual HRA received from your employer.
  • Rent paid minus 10% of your basic salary.
  • 50% of basic (metro cities) or 40% of basic (non-metro cities).
